Avoid regrets of not taking the chance or pursuing other paths that have been made available to you. Here are some pointers that would probably help you decide as to which career path you would take. You must remember to weigh your options – because choosing wrong might – no, would – probably tie you down in an unsatisfactory career when the time comes.

Know yourself.

I know, this sounds so normal – so bland. But this is perhaps one of the most important considerations that you need to know. Get to know your strengths; in which areas do you perform well? In which areas do you see yourself being outstanding?

Conversely, also ask yourself, what your weaknesses are. Which areas are you weak? Which areas need to be improved? Knowing these things would help you balance your perspective and help you give a total picture of your personality. What are you passionate about?

Make a list of possible occupations.

Now that you have seen where your strengths and weaknesses lay, you can now make a good choice of profession. Once you decide which profession to take and pursue in your later life, you can make a list of possible occupations that could possibly open up for you in the future.

Evaluate the jobs on the list – would it be rewarding? Would it be challenging for you? Would you be able to perform the demands of the job? If you are able to answer in the affirmative in all of the questions, you know you are on the right track.

Explore the occupations on your list.

Now that you have a list of possible occupations – it is time to do some research. Look for companies that could possibly employ you. Look for the strengths and weaknesses of the industry – would you be still employable after a few years? Find out a lot about your industry and field so you will have a clear picture of your future.

Make a short list.

Eliminate the ones which you think would not work for you and pursue the ones which you think would be rewarding for you.

Ask people who have first-hand knowledge.

Get more input from professionals who are working in your chosen field. Ask them in-depth questions so you can get a first-hand perspective and account of his world – the world you would try to enter in a few years.

Remember, choosing your career path is never going to be easy. It will be a difficult path but it is doable with the right amount of support from your parents, relatives, and friends. You will never have to choose on your own as there are people whom you can turn to when you have questions.

It is not going to be easy, but hey, you must know, there is no such thing as easy in this life.
